Australia has a drinking tradition and people from all ages and classes take to it as a swan takes on water. That is why Australia has one of the highest percentages of people who suffer from the problems of alcoholism. Alcoholism has been rampant in Australia since the mid sixties.
The main focal point of treatment of alcoholism in Australia is the national drug and alcohol research centre. This centre collaborates with medical, psychological and research institutes of the region to find out new and more effective ways of alcoholism treatment. The main reason behind establishing this center is to conduct high quality research and related activities that increases the effectiveness of the Australian and International treatment and other intervention responses to alcohol and other drug related harm.

The key mission statement of the institute is
(1) To improve our understanding of the nature and extent of alcohol and other drug-related harms to which treatment and other interventions should be directed;
(2) To increase knowledge on the range and effectiveness of treatment and other interventions that is aimed at reducing forms of alcohol and other drug related harm;
(3) to increase knowledge among treatment and intervention providers about which programs are effective and which individuals are most suited to them;
(4) To increase the community's knowledge of appropriate and effective treatment and other intervention programs for alcohol and drug-related problems

The NDAR also releases two pamphlets and distributes it among the people. These pamphlets contain detail descriptions about alcohol use its affect s and problems you might normally face as an alcoholic. They also provide you with treatment procedures and other resources on alcohol that as an alcoholic you might need.

Besides it there is the Australian division of the global alcohol prevention group called alcohol anonymous. The main objective of all alcoholic groups is to stay sober and help each other through the treatment process.

This organization was formed in 1965 by bill Wilson and doctor bob smith who both had past problems with alcohol and were still struggling with it. Both from there previous experiences with alcohol knew much about alcoholism and how its process work .so they formed a support community where alcoholics would sit and talk among themselves and support each other in staying sober. There are more than five thousand alcohol anonymous groups in Australia which caters to alcohol related problems and prevention techniques in Australia.

Alcohol anonymous believes in the treatment of alcoholism through spiritual awakening .so it can also be termed a religious cult in its own sense. They had formulated a twelve step theory for alcohol treatment. The Steps are designed to help the alcoholic achieve a spiritual, emotional and mental state conducive to lasting sobriety.

The famous twelve step program as defined by the alcohol anonymous group is
1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6. We’re entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs
